Roundtable Social Sciences and the World “The actor’s scale and the scholar’s scale: revisiting the boundaries of area studies” — Campus Condorcet Aubervilliers, 23 January 2024

Roundtable “Social Sciences and the World”
The actor’s scale and the scholar’s scale: revisiting the boundaries of area studies

In this roundtable, sponsored by the PRI “Social Sciences and the World”, a specialist of Turkey and Europe (Zana Çitak) and an anthropologist of Southeast Asia (Sean Martin-Iverson) will discuss the relation between area studies and social and spatial boundaries as defined by the actors. What makes the people they study consider themselves part of a community or a group within and beyond national boundaries? Does this create a methodological problem for the scholar? And how should the scholar take into account the situatedness of her or his own perspective?
