The Centre’s research areas include:
- Muslim Societies Past and Present
- Identity and Citizenship: Muslims in Britain and the West
- Classical Islamic Sciences
- Economic and Human Development and Islamic Finance
- Science, Technology, Environment and Muslim Societies
Applications are decided on the merits of the particular research the applicant is proposing to do or to complete, and scholars working in other research areas are encouraged to apply.
Visiting Fellowships and Visiting Research Fellowships
Applications are now OPEN for the academic year 2024–25. The closing date for Visiting Fellowship applications is 9 January 2024 and that for Visiting Research Fellowships is 16 January 2024.
The Abdul Aziz Al-Mutawa and the Muhammad Bin-Ladin Visiting Fellowships
These two stipendiary Visiting Fellowships are awarded annually to support an extended period of independent study and research at Oxford. They carry an annual stipend of £5000.

The Imam Bukhari and the Imam Tirmizi Visiting Research Fellowship
These two stipendiary Visiting Research Fellowships are open to citizens of countries in Asia or Africa and are intended to encourage interaction among academics from different traditions of learning. They carry an annual stipend of £4000.

The Centre welcomes applications for a limited number of non-stipendiary Visiting Fellowship and Visiting Research Fellowship awards.
Applications are now CLOSED for the academic year 2023–24. Applications will re-open in March 2024 for 2024-25.

Chevening Visiting Fellowships
The Chevening Visiting Fellowships Programme is run in partnership with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Chevening Fellows normally spend two terms of self-directed research at the Centre.
Up to four fully funded OCIS-Chevening Visiting Fellowships are available. These Fellowships are restricted to applicants from:
Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.
The Abdullah Gül Chevening Fellowship is restricted to applicants from Turkey.
Applications are submitted online via the Chevening website. The application window is currently OPEN to apply for 2024/25 entry and will close on 7 November 2023.
