Subject area
Arabic
Specific subject description
The subject area of Arabic at the University of Gothenburg offers education at all levels: first cycle, second cycle and third cycle. It is attracting an increasing number of students and has a good potential for expansion in the near future. The Faculty Board of Arts has recently adopted a development strategy for Arabic that aims to make the subject a leading environment for literature and culture studies, but that also points out language pedagogy and research in Arabic in Sweden as interesting new areas to develop further.
The subject is placed under the Department of Languages and Literatures and is involved in cooperation at several levels: with the other subjects at the Department and with various programmes within both the Department and the rest of the Faculty. Contract education for other higher education institutions is also provided. There is a clear ambition to further strengthen the cooperation with these and other environments both at and outside the University of Gothenburg.
Job assignments
The position includes mainly teaching and supervision of students at first- and second-cycle level, but also research to some extent. The holder of the position will also be expected to participate in the development of courses and programmes within the subject area and related fields. Other duties may be required as well, such as administrative responsibilities. The successful applicant will be expected to participate broadly in the Department’s activities and, if needed, assist with pedagogical supervision.
Eligibility
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure. To be eligible for the position, the applicant must hold a doctoral degree and have a research focus deemed relevant for the position. The applicant must also have demonstrated pedagogical proficiency.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure. In assessment of an applicant’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching skills and scholarly proficiency and other qualifications. The assessment covers:
- Teaching qualifications, including ability to teach in both Swedish and English – documented ability to teach in Arabic is an advantage;
- Research-related and scholarly qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the time during which active research has been conducted, degree of originality, international orientation and outlook;
- Qualifications within research information, communication and cooperation with the surrounding community;
- Participation in national and international academic networks;
- Experience of administrative assignments.
A specialisation in literature and culture studies, alternatively pedagogy and foreign and second language research, is desirable.
Most courses within the subject area are offered at first-cycle level. Thus, particular attention will be given to the applicant’s pedagogical skills and willingness to develop the teaching of Arabic as a modern language. Documented good pedagogical and didactic competence is a requirement.
Significant importance is also given to the applicant’s ability to work together with others to develop the education and research within common areas. Previous experience of course and programme development is an advantage.
All qualifications are assessed according to the criteria provided by the Faculty of Arts in its instructions for expert assessments: http://www.hum.gu.se/digitalAssets/1458/1458322_anvisningar-ovriga-larare-sakkunnig-.pdf
