Pre-Call : M.A. “Intellectual Encounters of the Islamicate World”, Freie Universität (Berlin)

For the first time in the academic year 2013-14 (starting on 14 October 2013),
the Freie Universität Berlin is offering a one-year MA program entitled
"Intellectual Encounters of the Islamicate World". The overall goal of the
degree course is to provide the international graduate students with a thorough
understanding of the deep and manifold interconnections between Muslim, Jewish
and Christian intellectual output during Medieval times. The students will
acquire expertise in a broad spectrum of aspects of the Islamicate world, such
as rational theology, philosophy, logic, exegesis, mysticism, law and legal
methodology as well as material culture and social history. Emphasis will be
placed on primary texts in the original language (Arabic). The primarily
web-based, English-spoken MA program will also include three actual classroom
meetings during the academic year (the Introductory Week as well as two
colloquia [of two weeks each] at the end of both Winter and Summer term) during
which the students and teachers will come together for discussion, teaching and
examination. There are no tuition fees, but only a small enrollment and
re-registration fee of around 290 Euro per semester including a semester ticket
for 180 Euro for Public Transportation that can be reimbursed afterwards.

Entry requirements

·         eight semesters (or equivalent) of university studies

·         240 credit points according to ECTS, with a minimum of 80 credit
points in one or more of the following:, Arabic, Islamic Studies, Jewish
Studies, Religious Studies and/or Philosophy

·         Language proficiency in English and Arabic (both C 1 according to
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
