Colloque : “Civic Education Conference Egypt 2013 (CECE)” — Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandrie (Egypte), 8-10/12/2013
Within the framework of the German-Egyptian transformation partnership the Goethe-Institut Cairo and the Tahrir Lounge in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the German Federal Agency for Civic Education are jointly organizing the Civic Education Conference Alexandria 2013 (CEC). The conference is taking place from 8th to 10th December 2013 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, hosted by the Center for Democracy and Social Peace Studies (CDSPS).
The current transition period in Egypt offers the opportunity to rethink the role of civic education in a society based on democratic principles. Citizens need to be enabled to understand that through their involvement in political life and the civil society they can actively influence political decision making and protect their individual rights. The civic education landscape of Germany proposes a whole set of useful methods, ranging from civic education in schools and universities, to documentation centers and internet-based parliamentary monitoring organizations.
In preparation of this conference a diverse group of Egyptian civil society professionals took part in a study trip in November 2012, to explore the application of civic education in Germany on the governmental, non-governmental and individual level. Following the study trip the whole group attended the conference Participation Now! Citizenship Education and Democracy in Times of Change in Cordoba (21 to 24 November 2012).
Resulting from the experience of the study trip and the conference visit, the group identified several topics of civic education to be addressed in the Egyptian context and has come up with the following broad objectives for the Civic Education Conference Alexandria 2013:
- Highlight the importance of civic education
- Set civic education on the public agenda
- Establish a platform for interested groups for future cooperation
- Stress the importance of civic engagement in civic education activities
- Initiate a discussion about a code of conduct for civic educators
- Formulate a set of recommendations for Egypt
