The Department of Religious Studies, along with the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures (MESALC), at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Islamic Studies. We seek a colleague whose primary area of expertise is the Qur’an, hadith and medieval exegetical traditions. The candidate should also possess an understanding of later and contemporary developments within Muslim societies. It is expected that candidates will be proficient in classical Arabic and other research languages as relevant. Possible areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: the construction of gender in early Islam, Islamic law, Islamic theology, formation of the qur’anic text, hermeneutics in qur’anic exegesis, and/or contemporary applications of classical texts. The successful candidate will offer courses in both Religious Studies and MESALC. Candidates must possess a strong commitment to teaching excellence and advanced research in Islamic Studies. Candidates will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to provide service to the University, to the Department and to professional organizations. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment. The appointment start date is August 25, 2014.
