Ca’ Foscari invites applications for a tenured-track position for an Assistant Professor in the area of History of Islamic Countries.

Ca’ Foscari is looking for a researcher in the area of History of Islamic Countries, capable of inspiring students to become game-changers in their own fields and to make a genuine difference in the world.

The profile required is that of a scholar with in-depth knowledge of the contemporary Arab world, with the ability of a multidisciplinary approach and a prolonged experience in the field. In particular, the researcher must demonstrate original analytical skills regarding the socio-economic and political dynamics of the Arab world (e.g. impact of political-economic structures on Arab societies; analysis of inequalities, problems of poverty, young people and the labor market ; in-depth knowledge of the actors influencing economic and political processes, from civil society associations, such as, for example, Islamist movements and workers’ movements, to international agencies and institutions such as the European Union; attention to the gender perspective of these dynamics), as well as possessing the linguistic and methodological tools necessary to access primary sources.

The researcher must guarantee teaching at least 60 hours of curricular and supplementary teaching in the three-year and master’s degree courses The didactic activities will concern in particular the teachings of “Political economy of the Arab countries”, “Economic policies of Arab countries”, “Cooperation and development in the Mediterranean”.

It is also required the willingness to follow three-year and master’s degree theses and possibly to contribute to the teaching activities of the PhD program

The position will be hosted in the Department of Asian and North African Studies. The Department has recently received a “Department of Excellence” Award by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. The Excellence Award has allowed the department to receive additional state funding to develop innovative projects for the creation of the Marco Polo International Research Centre (MaP) Centre for Global Europe-Asia Connections.The aim is to foster scientific cooperation at international level on innovative topics such as new religious identities, migrations, climate change and the history of relations between Europe, Asia and the Arab and Islamic world in a Transcultural perspective.

The QS World University Ranking by subject has placed Ca’ Foscari of Venice among the top 100 universities in the world for the study and teaching of Modern Languages.

Thanks to the wide array of activities and subjects offered by the Department, students can learn and explore Asian languages and their cultural context.

The skills and scientific interests of the DSAAM faculty members cover a wide geographic area from Africa to Japan. The specific fields of interest, often cross-disciplinary, can be divided into four main areas: linguistics, philology and literature; religions and philosophy; archaeology and cultural heritage conservation, figurative arts and performances; history, institutions, economics, society, politics and international relations.

The Department has strong international ties for educational, research and cultural purposes, which result in events, research fundings, Joint and Double Degree programmes and mobility opportunities for students and staff members.
