Description-cadre du sujet de thèse
Presque trente ans après leur accession à l’indépendance, les États d’Asie centrale sont traversés par de puissants courants de réislamisation provenant d’acteurs internes au pays et de prosélytes venant de l’étranger, généralement d’obédience fondamentaliste. Il en résulte un clivage de plus en plus prononcé dans chaque société, entre les musulmans « born again » salafistes et les ex-soviétiques partisans d’un État séculier, chaque camp montrant de fortes tendances à la radicalisation de leur discours et de leurs actes. Ce phénomène est frappant au Kirghizstan et au Kazakhstan, dans une moindre mesure dans les trois autres républiques où le camp des « laïcs » est remplacé par celui des musulmans modérés, acquis à l’idée d’un « islam national » promu par les présidents actuels pour lutter contre « l’influence extérieure ». Le sujet mérite l’attention de chercheurs ayant le souci des sources primaires et des enquêtes de terrain.

Le ou la doctorant·e sera rattaché·e au CETOBaC (UMR 8032), champ de recherche “Asie centrale et Caucase”, en collaboration avec l’Institut français d’études sur l’Asie centrale (USR 3140). Il ou elle sera inscrit·e à l’Ecole doctorale de l’EHESS (ED 286).

Le ou la doctorant·e devra mener un terrain de plusieurs mois en Asie centrale.

Topic Background Description
Nearly thirty years after their independence, the Central Asian states are crossed by powerful trends of re-Islamization coming both from internal actors in the country and from proselytes coming from abroad, generally of fundamentalist obedience. The result is an increasingly pronounced cleavage in each society, between Salafist “born again” Muslims and ex-Soviets in favor of a secular state, each side showing strong tendencies towards the radicalization of their discourse and their activities. This phenomenon is striking in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, and to a lesser extent in the three other republics where “laymen” are being replaced by moderate Muslims committed to the idea of a “national Islam”, as promoted by the current presidents of these states to fight against “external influences”. Such topics deserve the attention of scholars dedicated to analyzing primary sources and/or doing long-term fieldwork.
Work Environment
The PhD student will be affiliated to CETOBaC (UMR 8032), “Central Asia and the Caucasus” research field, in collaboration with the French Institute for Studies on Central Asia (USR 3140). He will be enrolled at the EHESS doctoral school (ED 286).
