Appel à communication : 9th Congress for Cyprus Studies, Famagusta, 24-25/04/2014 — LIMITE : 31/10/2013
Centre for Cyprus Studies is organising the 9th Congress for Cyprus Studies on 24-26th April 2014. The Congress aims to bring the scholars studying and doing research on different cultural aspects of Cyprus andthe island’s current socio-economic problems.
Cyprus is an island appearing as a tiny spot on the world map which may not interest many people in global terms. However, considering Fernand Braudel’s idea envisioning some of the Mediterranean islands, such as Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, Crete and Rhodes alongside Cyprus, each of them having an identity of a “miniature continent”, regarding their multi-cultural identity and their rich historical past as a base to disseminate cultural and trade exchanges, it could be said that there are several aspects of Cyprus still in need of to be explored and discussed at scientific, intellectual and global levels.
The description of the famous geographer of the 10th century, Muhammad ibn Ahmad Shams- al Din, commonly known as al-Muqaddasi (b. 946), is perhaps noteworthy to quote here to express the importance of Cyprus in the Mediterranean area: “Over against Tyre lies the island of Qubrus, said to twelve days’ journey round. It is full of populous cities, and offers the Muslims many advantages in their trade thither, by reason of great quantities of merchandise, stuffs and goods, which are produced there. The island is in the power of whichever nation is overlord in the seas. It lies distant across the water a sail of a night and a day, and from thence on the country of the Greeks in the same distance again”.
Thus the current political problem as well as environmental problems beside the unknown or forgotten historical and cultural aspects of the island will be the main issues to be discussed in the 9th International Congress of Cyprus Studies. Three keynote speakers also will deliver conferences within this context during the congress. The congress program will include a couple of extra-curricular activities. The Congress will take place in Gazimağusa, Salamis Bay Conti & Resort Hotel. Travel and accommodation facilities will be provided by the Congress organization in connection with Puzzle Travel Agency.
Paper proposals of unpublished research, bearing originality from a wide range of topics, all relevant to the aspects of Cyprus studies as well as Mediterranean area in connection to Cyprus are welcome to be considered for the 9th International Congress of Cyprus Studies. All papers will be screened by the Scientific Committee. Selected proposals will be assigned 20 minutes presentation during the congress.
