Description

The University of Chicago Divinity School seeks scholar(s) in the study of Islam in Africa for an appointment date of July 1, 2020. Rank and salary are open. We welcome applications at the assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor rank.

We are particularly interested in candidates with scholarly expertise in Islamic religious thought and practice in Africa who are also deeply engaged in one or more of the following areas of inquiry: interactions between Islam and other African religious traditions (such as Ifá or Christianity) or between different Islamic traditions (Sufism, Salafism, Shi’ism, Ahmadiyya, etc); poetic, literary, and artistic expression; race and ethnicity; gender; colonialism and post-colonialism; and globalization. We welcome applicants with a demonstrated commitment to the study of religion from all disciplinary backgrounds in the humanities and social sciences. Appointed scholars will be expected to participate in the broader community of Islamic studies at the University of Chicago, a community that includes scholars from numerous departments, programs, and centers.

The Divinity School is the graduate professional school for the academic study of religion at the University of Chicago, a private research university. Faculty in the School teach Ph.D. students; Master’s students in M.A., M.Div., and A.M.R.S. programs; and undergraduates in the College. Many faculty members hold associate appointments in humanities or social science departments and professional schools of the University.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment.

Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2019 and continue until all positions are filled or the search is closed. All applicants must provide: 1) cover letter, 2) Curriculum Vitae, 3) writing sample (limit to 25 pages), 4) statement of current and future research, and 5) statement of teaching philosophy and experience. If applying at the assistant professor rank, applicants must also solicit three letters of recommendation through the system. If applying at the associate professor or full professor rank, applicants will upload a document with the names and contact information of three references whose recommendation letters may be solicited if the candidate gets to the short-list phase of the search.
