Grade 7: £32,236 – £39,609 p.a.

We are seeking a full-time Islamic History Research Officer to work under the supervision of Professor Masooda Bano to develop a broad historical account of major knowledge production platforms in early and medieval Islamic history. Focusing on identifying the major madrasas and mosque based halaqs which became major centres of Islamic learning as well as formal or informal platforms where non-religious sciences were studied.

You will develop a database of these multiple platforms recording the primary or secondary sources available on particularly influential platforms. Applicants must be able to engage with primary Arabic sources and knowledge of Persian will be an added advantage. Familiarity with the scholarship of George Makdisi and Marshall Hodgson will be an advantage.

You should hold a PhD degree in Islamic intellectual or social history (However, candidates with a masters degree that provides solid training in engaging with primary Islamic sources will also be considered).  As well as having familiarity with existing studies on patterns and platforms of knowledge production in early Muslim societies, the ability to work with Arabic texts and high level written communication skills in English.

The post is fixed-term until 31 December 2019. 

Whilst the role is a Grade 7 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at Grade 6 (£28,660 – £34,189 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly (for Grade 6, you would be expected to hold a masters that provides solid training in engaging with primary Islamic sources). This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.
