We are recruiting a Social Psychology postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a research project examining the relationship between Science and Religion in Society based at the University of Birmingham. This role is one of seven that will work at UoB on the Science and Religion: Exploring the Spectrum Global Perspectives project (SRES2) led by Professor Fern Elsdon-Baker. There will also be an international team working on the SRES2 project in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the US.
SRES2 Project is the social study of the relationship between science and religion is an emergent and growing field of research. To date research has tended to focus on US contexts, on scientists’ beliefs and perspectives, or on the beliefs of distinct ‘creationist’ faith groups and those who oppose them. Ending in Dec 2017, the Science and Religion: Exploring the Spectrum (SRES1) project, undertaken in the UK and Canada was the first multi- disciplinary project of its kind and sought to examine the historical, cultural, social and psychological drivers for public space narratives surrounding evolution and religion. SRES2 is a three-year follow-on project that will expand the SRES1’s innovative multi- disciplinary method across a further 6 countries to address the gap in international research and to ascertain if processes identified in SRES1 are localized to predominantly Anglophone ‘secular’ cultural contexts or are evident more broadly.
The post holder will work closely with the Principal Investigators (PI – Professor Fern Elsdon-Baker and Co-PI Dr Carola Leicht) and Co-investigator (Dr Carissa Sharp) to undertake social psychological experimental field research examining evolutionary science and religion in relation to social identity in the UK, Sri Lanka, Spain, Germany, and Argentina.
Duties include:
- Develop research objectives and proposals for own and joint research relating directly to the social study of evolutionary science and religion in society, under supervision of principal investigator(s) and co-investigator(s) and with the assistance of a mentor if required.
- To work closely with the Principal Investigator and Co-investigators to undertake social psychological experimental field research examining evolutionary science and religion in relation to social identity in 5 countries (including the UK).
