The Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for a

Junior Professorship for “Islamic Philosophy and the Foundations of Belief” with Tenure Track (W1)

to the next possible date. This is a tenure track position. In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of a permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than after five years of service.

With Kalām (speculative theology) and Islamic philosophy and mysticism, this professorship focuses on three key fields of Islamic scholarship. In his or her research and teaching, the successful candidate will address the historical contextualisation of various mystical, philosophical and doctrinal currents (in particular Sunna and Shia), including the reception of classical and late antique sciences, especially Aristotelian and neo-Platonic thought. Conveying and interpreting these currents with a view to contemporary theological and (religious) philosophical discourses also falls within the remit of this professorship. A focus on gender aspects in research work is also desirable. An outstanding doctorate in the field of Islamic theology relevant to these research areas is therefore a requirement. Furthermore, a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation is expected both with other faculties and institutes of the Humboldt-Universität, as well as with other research institutions in the Berlin area.

With respect to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the structure of the undergraduate Bachelor’s programmes, the Master’s programmes in Islamic Theology and “Islam and Society”, as well as to the envisaged doctoral programme.

The successful candidate will also be required to support the establishment and self-administration of the Berlin Institute for Islamic Theology.

The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 102a of the ‘Berliner Hochschulgesetz’.
