This conference intends to think comparatively about the relationship between aesthetic phenomena and authority in South and Southeast Asia. In this part of the world, the aesthetic dimension plays a particularly important role in the legitimation of different types of authority, be they religious, political, artistic, or otherwise.
Jointly conducted by four French research units from Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL)––The Centre Asie du Sud-Est (CASE), the Centre d’Etudes de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud (CEIAS), the Laboratoire d’Anthropologie Sociale (LAS) and the Groupe Sociétés Religions Laïcités (GSRL)––this international, interdisciplinary conference endeavours to open a dialogue between scholars from a wide range of backgrounds and specialities for the shared goal of understanding these processes.
Keynote speakers
Olga Dror (Historian, Texas A&M University, USA)
James Fox (Anthropologist, Australian National University, Australia)
Christopher Pinney (Anthropologist, University College London, United Kingdom)
