Professor of Cultural Anthropology of Africa (pay grade: W3)

This is a permanent civil service position.

The successful candidate will represent the entire spectrum of cultural anthropology of Africa. He or she will have extensive experience in teaching and research in the field of social anthropology, experience in empirical research, and an innovative research focus that complements Bayreuth’s existing research areas in social anthropology.

The postholder will further develop the subject area social anthropology at the University of Bayreuth with its many intersections in the Faculty of Cultural Studies and will engage in joint research projects. He or she will be expected to actively contribute to the University’s focus areas, especially African Studies.

Teaching will be in the scope of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes relating to African studies, social anthropology (BA Social Anthropology, BA Culture & Society, BA and MA African Culture & Society, MA Cultural & Social Anthropology), and in our Graduate School, BIGSAS.

Requirements for this position (according to Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, doctoral degree, Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), and proven excellence in teaching. Evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. The ability to teach in the English language is expected. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
