M.S. Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies, Ohio State University (États-Unis) — LIMITE : 01/11/2015

The Ohio State University’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures invites applications for the M.S. Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The preferred field of specialization is pre-modern Arabic Islamic texts and traditions or classical Arabic language and literature. Areas of expertise may include Qur’an and tradition literature, pre-Islamic poetry, philosophy, Islamic theology, belles-lettres, and Arabic grammar and lexicography, among others.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have: a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures or a cognate or related field; a distinguished record of scholarly publications; demonstrated excellence in teaching; and experience in mentoring advanced students in their long-term research projects. He or she will have highly advanced ability in traditional literary Arabic and developed research skills in at least one other language of the region. Native or near-native fluency in modern Arabic is preferred. The successful candidate will teach courses ranging from lectures for beginning undergraduates to advanced Arabic text seminars for PhD students, will supervise doctoral candidates, will participate in the service of the department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the Ohio State University, and will serve as a liaison between the department and the wider community.  Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
