Theme: INTEGRATING SOUTHEAST ASIA
Integrating Southeast Asia presupposes an idealism of a united bloc of nation-states that celebrates a culturally – diverse community, ethnically mobile citizens, economically progressive markets and politically stable region founded on social constructs of consensus, harmony and peace. Southeast Asia is at present facing challenges and issues more than ever before. Is the common aspiration to establish an integrated Southeast Asia sustainable given the geopolitical forces at play, the intensifying effects of globalisation and the new wave of media technology, which, to a large extent, attempt to challenge the shared aspiration of a united and ‘integrated’ Southeast Asia? The potentiality of integration may sound rhetorical and imagined. Hence, delving into the nature, characteristics and implications that such unification brings within the global and regional contexts is most urgent and timely. The 6th International Conference on Southeast Asia aims to provide a platform to articulate these concerns and issues.
ICONSEA2015 invites academics, scholars, observers and experts to discuss, debate and examine various issues that promote or perhaps inhibit an Integrating Southeast Asia with the sub-themes as follows:
