FULL-TIME CONTRACT FACULTY POSITION IN ARABIC LANGUAGE

Institution: Bayan Claremont is an Islamic graduate school operating as a division of the Claremont School of Theology in Southern California. Bayan offers a 48-unit accredited MA in Islamic Studies and Leadership, which includes courses in Islamic Studies, interreligious studies, ethics, leadership, non-profit management, civic engagement, counseling, and spiritual care. Arabic language proficiency (MSA) at the intermediate level is required for graduation.
Position: Bayan is opening a new full-time contract faculty position in Arabic Language. Bayan seeks an energetic, engaging, and innovative faculty member who will update our Arabic curriculum, teach first and second year university-level Arabic, offer enrichment through study of Islamic scriptures and classical texts, and plan for growth of Arabic studies at the institution. In particular, the qualified candidate will be expected to design, manage and conduct a unique 8-week intensive online summer Arabic program in June/July 2015, and to design, manage and conduct 2 semester-long online courses during Fall 2015 and Spring 2016. These courses involve synchronous and asynchronous teaching modes. Note that relocation to Southern California is encouraged, but not required, due to the online nature of the position. The ideal candidate will be technologically proficient so as to set up and effectively utilize all required hardware and provided software tools necessary for delivering instruction. Course design will take place in Spring 2015, with final testing of the LMS and all associated online tools in May. First day of instruction will be June 8.
Course Design Activities (Feb. 23 – April 30):

Develop scaffolded Beginning and Intermediate Arabic course curriculum (scope and sequence) and lesson outline for online delivery.

Assemble instructional content and supporting resources.

Prepare series of on-camera lectures using screencasting, whiteboard tool and other software.

Integrate self-paced assignments, synchronous class-time activities, and homework involving reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Develop performance rubrics and design formative and summative assessments.
Candidates meeting all of the following qualifications are invited to apply:
- Possesses at least a Master’s Degree in Arabic Language (TASL) or a related field.
- Demonstrates near-native proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in Arabic.
- Has at least five years of recent Arabic teaching experience in a U.S. college/university.
- Has at least two years of experience teaching in an intensive language program.
- Has experience in online course design and teaching, and is technologically proficient.

Salary: Salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience. The initial hire will be for a one-year full-time contract, after which an extended renewable contract may be granted.
