Full Professor/Associate Professor in Arabic Language and Culture, University of Bergen (Norvège) — LIMITE : 16/03/2015
The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen, Norway, is seeking to appoint a full-time, tenured Full Professor/Associate Professor in Arabic Language and Culture from 1 August 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. If none of the applicants is found qualified for appointment as a Professor, they may be evaluated for appointment as an Associate Professor. Arabic is one of ten programs at the Department of Foreign Languages, which offers degrees in 9 different languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish language and Latin American studies. In addition to the position as Professor/Associate Professor, the Arabic section also has one Associate Professor, 2 University lecturers (one of them in 50 per cent position) and one PhD fellow.
Qualification requirements
The successful candidate must have a Norwegian doctorate within Arabic Linguistics or Philology, or an equivalent doctorate from a foreign institution, alternatively an academic production of comparable scope and quality. By Arabic linguistics we mean scientific studies using modern Linguistic theories and methods to gain knowledge about the Arabic language in a historical or synchronic perspective. By Arabic Philology we understand specializations in the history of literature, religion or language history with a clear philological or linguistic approach. Candidates with documented qualifications in one or more of the Middle East languages in addition to Arabic and competence within Arabic culture in a broad sense will be preferred. Arabic is part of a larger teaching and research community linked to Middle East and Islamic studies at the University of Bergen (UiB). The successful candidate is expected to contribute to developing this community in cooperation with other sections at the University. The Arabic section at the UiB offers courses for beginners up to PhD level, and the successful candidate should be able to document satisfactory teaching skills and also be prepared to participate in the teaching of Arabic language and culture at a high level, including supervision of both MA and PhD candidates. The courses are taught in both Arabic and Norwegian, while the administrative language is Norwegian. It is an assumption that applicants without sufficient skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language learn Norwegian within two years of the date of appointment.
