Birmingham-Southern College invites applications for a full time, tenure track appointment in Arabic at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2015. BSC’s collegial Modern Foreign Language Department is committed to hiring a colleague with a genuine passion for teaching and proven success in the classroom.

The College seeks a dynamic teacher/scholar to develop our recently added Arabic language program. Superior language proficiency in both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and English is required, with native or native-like proficiency in at least one Arabic dialect and familiarity with best practices in the communicative method strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant area at the time of appointment and have a robust research agenda that is accessible to undergraduates. The field of expertise is open. Experience in teaching undergraduates in a North American university is required, with a strong preference for candidates with experience in a liberal arts setting. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory and upper level Arabic language courses; the incumbent may also contribute to other academic programs. The successful candidate will understand and uphold the academic values of the College and will possess a strong commitment to academic rigor and excellence in undergraduate teaching in the liberal arts setting.

Located in Birmingham, Alabama, BSC is a four-year, private institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College currently enrolls 1,200 undergraduate students, is included in Pope’s 40 Colleges that Change Lives, and is a sheltering institution for Phi Beta Kappa.
