The UVa Arts & Sciences Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures invites applicants for a tenure-track /tenured position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Arabic Literature. Field of specialization is classical Arabic literature before 1800 with a special emphasis on poetry or prose, subfield of specialization open. Outstanding scholarship with a superior record of scholarly publications commensurate to rank, evidence of excellent teaching, and commitment to interdisciplinary work are required. The successful candidate must have native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English, and must hold a Ph.D. in Arabic literature, preferably with training in comparative literature, at the time of the position’s start date on August 25, 2015. Language proficiency in Persian, Urdu, and other classical languages is an advantage, and so is the ability to ground one’s research in literary theory as well as the broader debates in the field and the Humanities more generally. We are looking for a colleague who will participate actively and fully in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the department.
