Keynote Speaker: Professor Vincent Cornell
Medieval Alexandria was an important meeting point of Maghreb and Mashreq. It was on the crossroads of Andalusian poets, Sufis, jurists, philosophers, chemists, pilgrims and merchants. On its shores, many of those important figures in the Islamic history landed, and some of them settled down for long years. Among those figures, there are Abū Bakr al-Ṭarṭūšī (451-520 H,) the author of Sirāj al-Mulūk, Abū Muḥammad al-Šāṭibī (538-590 H,) the famous Quran recitation scholar, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Šušturī (610-668 H,) the great Sufi scholar, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Mursī (616-685 H,) the famous Šādhilī Sufi, and Abū Isḥāq al-Šāṭibī (720-790 H,) the great uṣulī scholar.
“Andalusia in Alexandria” is an annual conference that will convene alternatively in Alexandria and an Andalusian city, for instance Seville, Cordoba, or Murcia. The Organizing Committee of this interdisciplinary conference invites contributions to the current scholarship of cultural, social, religious, political and economic relationships between Maghreb and Mashreq that were fostered in Alexandria.
