Appel à communications : International Conference “Sayfo 1915 – The Genocide of Assyrians/Arameans”, Freie Universität Berlin (Allemagne), 24-28/06/2015 — LIMITE : 30/11/2014
The issues concerning the historicity of the genocide of the First World War, commonly known and referred to as the Armenian genocide have been widely discussed by scholars across different academic disciplines for a long time. However, very few know of the genocide of the Assyrians/Arameans which took place in the same geography and at the same time.
The descendants of the survivors of the 1915 genocide, while commemorating the hundred-year anniversary of this genocide, have been faced with a new catastrophe in the Middle East. Assyrians/Arameans commonly refer to their tragic history with ‘history is repeating itself’. Similar to their fate during the First World War, today, they are caught in a terrible process of extirpation from their historic homelands. Besides the community members, experts worldwide are discussing whether the ethnic and religious minorities have a future in the Middle East.
Against the background of recent developments, this conference seeks specifically to shed light on the genocide of Assyrians/Arameans during the First World War from a multidisciplinary perspective. This implies to bring together scholars working on different aspects of this genocide.
Of particular importance will be to bring new sources and less-researched issues to the front. It is our intention to provide a space for a highly elaborated academic discussion on this topic. Drawing on the expertise of scholars from a variety of backgrounds, the aim of the conference will be to serve as a step for developing the future scholarship about the Sayfo.
This call seeks for papers engaged in empirical, theoretical and methodological research in the study of the Sayfo that may cover one or several of the following themes:
– Pre-Sayfo period
– Local studies
– Confiscation and Capitalization
– Converted Assyrians/Arameans
– The Sayfo from comparative perspectives
– The perpetrators then and now
– Post-Sayfo period: Impacts of the genocide
– The Sayfo today
