Resident Fellow Director (3 positions) and Program Outreach & Communications Director, Arabian Gulf Institute in Washington (Etats-Unis) — LIMITE : 01/11/2014

The Arabian Gulf Institute in Washington, an independent, non-profit new organization dedicated to advancing research and policy deliberations on U.S.-Arabian Gulf countries’ issues is seeking to fill three full-time permanent Resident Fellow Director positions (see below) and one Program Outreach & Communications Director position. Unit Directors will be based in Washington, D.C. and will be expected to write short and long term policy and academic papers of publishable quality designed to enhance U.S.-Arabian Gulf countries’ understanding and cooperation in the fields of national security, political economy, energy security, and socio-political dynamics. The four positions to be filled are as follows: 1. Director of Strategy and Politics Unit 2. Director of Economics and Energy Security Unit 3. Director of Social Studies and Culture Unit 4. Director of Program Outreach and Communications Unit

Director of Strategy and Politics: This position is located in Washington D.C. The Director of the Strategy and Politics Unit is responsible for producing highly analytic, timely and relevant short policy essays, medium length Occasional Papers, and long term strategic papers on political and security issues affecting U.S.- Arabian Gulf countries’ interests and security. The candidate selected will be active in soliciting similar papers and studies from non-resident academics and policy makers (non-resident fellows) both in the United States and from the Arabian Gulf countries. The Director is also responsible for supporting all facets of AGI’s other programs, including panel discussions, colloquia and conferences, lectures and cultural events. He/she recognizes the value of and need for a wide variety of academic and policy events and activities. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate of an internationally recognized academic institution with a doctorate degree in politics, international Relations or politics, security studies, and/or Arabian Gulf studies. Interest in Persian Gulf security and political dynamics is a must.

Director of Economics: This position is located in Washington D.C. The Director of the Economics Unit is responsible for producing long and short-term strategic papers on economic issues affecting U.S.- Arabian Gulf countries’ interests and security. The candidate selected will be active in soliciting similar papers and studies from non-resident academics and policy makers both in the United States and the Arabian Gulf countries. The Director is also responsible for supporting all facets of AGI’s other programs including panel discussions, colloquia and conferences, and the lecture and film series. He/she recognizes the value of and need for a wide variety of academic and policy events and activities. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate of an internationally recognized academic institution with a doctorate degree in Political Economy, Macroeconomics, or Development Studies, preferably with a focus on the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula countries. Interest in Gulf energy issues, pipeline diplomacy; impact of energy resources on absorptive capacities; diversification; trade and monetary issues; Business climate and risk management; and environmental degradation are desirable.

Director of Social Studies and Culture: This position is located in Washington D.C. The Director of the Social Studies and Culture Unit is responsible for producing long and short-term strategic papers on sociopolitical, socioeconomic and cultural issues affecting U.S.- Arabian Gulf countries’ interests and security. The candidate selected will be active in soliciting similar papers and studies from non-resident academics and policy makers both in the United States and the Arabian Gulf countries. The Director is also responsible for supporting all facets of AGI’s other programs including panel discussions, colloquia and conferences, and the lecture and film series. He/she recognizes the value of and need for a wide variety of academic and policy events and activities. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate of an internationally recognized academic institution with a doctorate degree in Near East Studies with a focus on the Arabian Gulf region. An interest in tribal societies and traditions; gender issues; religious and ethnic/sectarian issues; youth empowerment; social networks; social media; civil society; minority politics; inclusion versus exclusion; expatriates in the Gulf; and cross cultural modes of communications, is highly desirable. Some fluency in written Arabic and in spoken Arabic is a plus.

Director of Program Outreach and Communications: This position is located in Washington D.C. The Director of Program Outreach and Communications Unit is an experienced program officer specialist with experience in planning and implementing programs and communicating with the press. Knowledge of the Middle East and US policies are required. The candidate selected is responsible for establishing efficient and effective public outreach through a variety of public programs designed to attract the Washington community of decision makers in the legislative and executive branches of the US government as well as Think Tanks and Academia. He/she is responsible for “marketing”? AGI’s publications to the outside world and for developing sustainable strategies of engagement with the media through print, broadcast and social media networks. The ideal candidate will have experience in program organization and implementation, overseeing a program budget, media relations, message development, and digital communications. Previous experience in media relations and planning and implementing policy programs is a plus. Some fluency in verbal and written Arabic is desirable.

Employment Conditions: Directors are appointed to three-year renewable positions. Initial contractual appointments and subsequent renewals are subject to AGI Board of Directors approval. The first year of employment is probationary.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and future potential. A health insurance allowance, a two-week annual leave, and sick leave are provided as part of the contract.

Travel and Travel Allowance: Directors will be required to occasionally travel to the Arabian Gulf countries and elsewhere to build collaborative policy and academic programs and to engage in productive professional exchanges in support of their department’s research projects as well as those of AGI. Travel authorization is subject to the AGI President’s approval.
