Appel à communications : “Remnants of the Nation”, Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies Symposium, Izmir (Turquie), 30-31/10/2014  — LIMITE : 30/06/2014

Is all that is left of the nation a set of remnants to be mourned, or is mourning over remains precisely a sign of our captivation by the form of the nation? Posing the question of the remnants of the nation within the field of literary and cultural studies in 2014, this two-day seminar aims to raise a number of contemporary—or contemporarily exacerbated—problems of national form, and it intends to do so from a comparative perspective. We invite proposals for paper presentations that discuss the nation and its margins in relation to remnants, memories, and memorializing from the fields of literary and cultural studies and/or interdisciplinary studies that incorporate insights from other social sciences and humanities disciplines. Topics can include, but are not limited to,

  • Nation, nationalism, trans-/post-nationalism, post-coloniality
  • Memory, mourning, nostalgia
  • Minority and migrant fictions
  • Diasporic memoirs, auto/biographies, life writing
  • Empire, state violence, and collective trauma
  • The gendering of home and homeland
  • Alternative paradigms: regionalisms, globalism, atlanticisms, hybridity
  • Depictions: remains of the nation in visual culture
  • Exchanges (population, cultural, linguistic), translations, and transpositions
  • Architecture, (urban) space, and national identity
  • Immigration/ethnicity and gentrification/displacement in postmetropolis
  • Media: discourse and nationality

The seminar and subsequent workshop on cultural pluralism and academic literary studies in Turkey will take place on 30-31 October 2014 on Yaşar University’s central campus in Bornova, Izmir.
