The Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King’s College
London is seeking a Lecturer in Political Science and Religion to join
an innovative, forward-looking and dynamic team. The Department of
Theology and Religious Studies (TRS) at King’s is a large, thriving and
highly interdisciplinary department, specialising in the study of
religion from theological, philosophical, historical and
social-scientific perspectives. Areas of particular strength include the
study of contemporary religious transformations in multi-religious and
secular societies, religion in conflict and reconciliation, and new
religio-political movements. The successful candidate will teach
undergraduate courses (modules) for the new BA degree in Religion,
Politics and Society, as well as contributing to the School of Arts &
Humanities BA in Liberal Arts; s/he will also teach for the MA programme
in Religion in Contemporary Society.
King’s College London has one of the largest concentrations of experts
on the political sciences in the UK. Alongside world-leading departments
like War Studies and Defence Studies, the College is home to two
recently founded departments, European and International Studies
(located in the School of Arts and Humanities) and the Department of
Political Economy (located in the School of Social Sciences and Public
Policy). The new BA in Religion, Politics and Society complements a
range of successful BA degrees that have been established since 2011,
including the BA/BSc in Politics in the International Economy, the BA in
International Politics, and a new BA in International Relations. The new
post-holder will be expected to enhance the connections between the
social scientists in the TRS Department and political scientists across
the Schools of Arts and Humanities and of Social Sciences and Public
Policy, as well as the King’s Global Institutes. This post offers a
chance to make a substantial contribution to the development of the
social-scientific study of religion at King’s College London and to gain
experience of teaching and research in a world-class university.
Details:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Political Science and
Religion, or equivalent, with an in-depth understanding of the academic
field of Political Science and Religion from an international
perspective. S/he will have a specialism that builds on the
world-leading research and teaching strengths of the Department in the
social-scientific study of religion, specifically in the area of
Political Science and Religion, or equivalent. (A research focus on one
or more of the following areas would be particularly welcome: religion
in Western democracies, government, and party politics; international
institutions; global civil society and media; human rights
organisations; transnational networks. A regional specialization in the
politics and religion of North America, South America, or Western Europe
would also be desirable.) S/he will demonstrate evidence of future plans
for REF publications and impact, and will have experience of teaching at
different levels in Political Science and Religion, or equivalent, the
ability to work collaboratively and collegially, and excellent
communication skills. S/he will give evidence of proactive thinking with
potential for leadership, and will have an understanding and working

Indefinite Contract
Salary:
The appointment will be made, dependent on relevant qualifications and
experience, within the Grade 6 or grade 7 scale, currently £31,644 to
£37,756 or £38,907 to £46,400 respectively per annum, plus £2,323 London
Allowance per annum.
