Recent political developments in Turkey have raised the question to what extent the last decades have witnessed a real transformation of the power structures that shape society. Has the country’s political culture moved beyond modes of hierarchical engagement between the state and its citizens? Are we witnessing the rise of new forms of state action or a return to 20th century authoritarianism? In this context, the transformative impact and lasting power of the Gezi movement must be critically assessed. The international conference will provide a platform for a critical and interdisciplinary debate on a changing Turkey.

The event will bring together some of the most important institutions, organizations, and scholars from Europe and Turkey committed to the study of modern Turkey. The papers accepted to the conference will be presented and discussed during the following sessions:

Turkey and its Neighbors – Chair: Senem Aydın Düzgit (Istanbul Bilgi University)

Democratization and Institutional Reform – Chair: Fuat Keyman (Istanbul Policy Center at Sabanci University)

Public Space and Contestation – Chair: Ayfer Bartu Candan (Boğaziçi University)

Political Economy – Chair: Çağlar Keyder (Bogaziçi University)

Identities and Transgressions: Religion, Ethnicity, Sexuality – Chair: Esra Özyürek (London School of Economics)
