Appel à participation | Workshop Series – Open Call for Participants “Mapping « Mental Health » and Care Practices in Lebanon, Palestine and Syria” — LIMITE : 15/06/2026

When political, social, and economic inequalities permeate even the most intimate folds of daily life for the majority, and war looms as a constantly renewed possibility, how is mental health defined, how is care provided, and how do people care for themselves and each other? How do we understand mental health in relation to healthcare systems, and how does this relation reflect the contours of what constitutes a (social) state? This hybrid workshop series takes these questions as drivers for collective and interdisciplinary reflection, using qualitative mapping methodologies as its primary tool. It is part of the SAHA research program, which gathers an interdisciplinary team that explores health—and more specifically mental health—as an empirical entry point to understand how the right to health unfolds in the structurally unequal Lebanese system, where the fragmentation and hybridisation of public health action and the scarcity of care resources—human, financial, and material—have become the norm. The workshop invites participants to explore mapping as a way to hold together multiple layers of a social issue, unsettle dominant discourses around health and illness, and foreground the processual nature of making sense of suffering, care, and recovery in contexts of protracted colonialism, war, and multisectoral crisis. The workshop series is intended to sustain and grow this collective conversation and the production of individual maps, and will culminate in a dissemination program planned for September 2027.
