Lecturer in Art Curating and Museology, Doha, Qatar — LIMITE : 10/06/2014

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 8. The salary range will be QR222,760-QR265,817 per annum + generous package, exclusive of London Allowance.

UCL Qatar wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Art Curating and Museology at its campus in Doha to deliver teaching on the MA in Museum and Gallery Practice.

The Gulf region is investing in high profile art museums and the international art world, as well as developing an agenda of regionally focussed artistic practice and institutions with an emphasis on the contemporary as a space for non-western artistic expression. The MA in Museum and Gallery Practice at UCL Qatar acknowledges this regional interest and aims to develop its teaching in curatorial theory and practice in relation to modern and contemporary art in a non-western context.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of developing, coordinating and delivering teaching at Masters level in the area of museum and gallery theory and practice, as well as experience of dissertation and research supervision at MA/PhD level.
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate familiarity with general art history and curatorial practice, as well as modern and contemporary artistic developments and practices in non-western contexts. The successful candidate will have a track record of research and publication in an area relevant to museology and art history theory and practice with special emphasis on non-western contexts, and will continue to undertake high quality research relevant to Qatar and the Gulf’s museum and gallery developments.

The post-holder will also contribute to short course teaching (continuing professional development and public courses), to UCL Qatar’s public engagement programme, and will be expected to work closely with colleagues at Qatar Museums.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Museum studies or in a relevant subject. The appointed candidate will be able to demonstrate familiarity with the recent museum and heritage developments in the Gulf region and/or wider Arab/Islamic world, and have first-hand research of work-related experience in this region and will ideally have a specialisations in one or more of the following areas: Art curation, Digital heritage, Intangible heritage, Museum education.

The successful candidate will have a track record of research and publication in an area relevant to cultural heritage in the Islamic world, and will continue to undertake high quality research relevant to Qatar and the Gulf’s heritage developments.
