Call for papers | Revue Occhialì “Within and Beyond Islam. Stories and Engagement of Young Muslims in Italy” — LIMITE : 10/09/2026

Call for Papers for Issue 18/2026 of Occhialì – Rivista sul Mediterraneo islamico“Conflicts and Migrations in the Contemporary Mediterranean: Borders, Mobility, and Wars in the New Millennium.”
This thematic issue, edited by Fabrizio Di Buono and Gabriele Leone, will gather contributions that address the theme of migration and conflict in the Mediterranean area. We will consider works that take a multidisciplinary approach to issues in political science, history, cooperation, international relations, and international law, as well as in sociology (cultural studies, gender studies, post-colonial and decolonial studies) and anthropology, particularly through methodologies such as life stories and participant observation. We particularly welcome submissions dealing with the following topics:

  • Contemporary armed conflicts, environmental and social conflicts, the possible role of religions, and the resulting forced mobility;
  • Conflicts beyond states: the role of large corporations and technology in military, environmental, and social conflicts and in Mediterranean geopolitics;
  • Studies that focus on multi-religious contexts, analyzing the condition of refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as the routes and causes of new diasporas, to understand the dynamics of inclusion, exclusion, conflict, and cultural denial;
  • Cultural and religious representations and public narratives of migration and/or conflicts that directly or indirectly affect the Mediterranean area;
  • Migration routes as spaces of power, control, and resistance;
  • Borders and the proliferation of borders as a reorganization of social, political, and economic relations and as an agent of the subjectivation and desubjectivation of people;
  • Institutional responses and policies for managing migration flows, as well as the organization of civil society within migration policies;
  • The colonial nature of power in the socioeconomic, political, and legal relations that accompany conflicts and migration in the Mediterranean;
  • Geopolitical transformations and the role of cooperation (international and/or humanitarian) and international law affecting the Mediterranean, both from a South-South perspective and in North-South relations.

Paper submission (max. 30,000 characters, spaces included, bibliography excluded) is due by 10 September 2026. Proposals should be addressed to rivistaocchiali@gmail.com. Please ensure your work follows our editorial and transliteration guidelines before submission.
