Edited by Dan Hodgkinson, Jennifer Blaylock and Anita Afonu

At the junction of history, anthropology, and film studies, this double issue analyses the genealogies and multiple incarnations of revolutionary African cinema, from the Maghreb to South Africa, from Angola to Ethiopia. By reexamining the iconic works and filmmakers of the independence era, the authors present a broader conception of revolution. Through interviews and film analysis, the articles revisit the conditions of production and reception of these works, from the 1960s to the present day. The question of preservation and access to materials (reels, scripts, public or private archives, on the continent or in the global North), at a time of digitisation and debates on the restitution of African cultural heritage, is at the heart of their analysis. Considered together, the various contributions reveal the ambivalence of Africa’s revolutionary heritage, caught between propaganda, censorship, and legitimate aspirations for both political and cultural emancipation.
