Offer Description

The RePaZ project (Recherche et Patrimoine en Zones de crises / Research and Heritage in Crisis Zones) was launched in January 2025. It is led by the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) and is part of the Sphinx consortium (Sustaining and Preserving cultural Heritage: Innovation, Networking and eXpertise), coordinated by the Observatoire des Patrimoines de l’Alliance Sorbonne Université (OPUS). It also receives support from the CNRS research unit Études aréales (UAR 2999).

The mission of this project is to support research on tangible heritage in regions affected by conflicts and in political contexts where access to the field is restricted.

Such “constrained” contexts often lead researchers to develop, sometimes empirically and in isolation, alternative strategies to bypass limitations in fieldwork and/or data collection. These approaches, which rely on alternative methodologies, now deserve to be documented, compared, and theorized.

To this end, the RePaZ unit is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher who obtained a PhD in art history or archaeology within the last five years, with the mission of contributing to this reflection through the study of a specific field.

As RePaZ focuses on the Middle East and its border regions during its initial development phase, candidates are expected to propose an original research project dealing with the tangible heritage of this area, understood as any cultural property that bears witness to past and present human societies. The chosen methodology should contribute to advancing reflection on the methodological, and potentially epistemological, developments specific to research on constrained heritage.

Activities:

  • Conduct an original research project on the tangible heritage of a region in the Middle East, with an approach centered on remote investigation in a constrained fieldwork context. The aim is to theorize remote research practices, while addressing legal, ethical, and scientific dimensions.
  • Collaborate with the scientific coordinator of the unit at INHA, notably by contributing to:
    • monitoring ongoing initiatives, both nationally and internationally, that support research and researchers working in conflict zones, as well as new or alternative methodologies;
    • organizing meetings in France and abroad with experts from the fields of research and heritage protection;
    • producing methodological resources (publications, seminars, workshops) for researchers confronted with restricted-access contexts;
    • contributing to the scientific activities of RePaZ (events, workshops, etc.) and to the national and international visibility of the project.
