Sixth Annual Forum for Contemporary Syrian Studies”, Arab Centre for Contemporary Syrian Studies, Damascus, 25-26 July 2026 — LIMITE : 15/11/2025

The Annual Forum for Contemporary Syrian Studies / Sixth Session, July 25–26, 2026 The Arab Center for Contemporary Syrian Studies announces the opening of submissions for research proposals to participate in the Sixth Session of the Forum for Contemporary Syrian Studies, to be held in Damascus on July 25–26, 2026. This year, the Forum convenes in the context of a new historical phase in Syria, following the fall of the former regime and the profound impact it left on the state, society, and the landscape of scholarship and academic research in the country. This transitional phase is marked by various complexities, as Syria faces structural challenges—both political and social—related to rebuilding the state and its institutions on new foundations of legitimacy, representation, and accountability. At the same time, the economic dimension looms large, with urgent needs for strategies of reconstruction and sustainable development, as well as for alleviating the long-term effects of war on infrastructure, labor markets, and standards of living. On the cultural and intellectual levels, this stage calls for the revitalization of scientific research, universities, and think tanks, in order to generate rigorous knowledge that addresses the needs of society and contributes to shaping practical visions for transitional justice, national reconciliation, and the formulation of a new social contract. The Forum invites scholars and researchers of all nationalities to participate by submitting research papers that address issues of relevance to Syria’s transitional phase, including political, social, economic, and cultural challenges, as well as prospects for its future. In line with the mission of the Arab Center for Contemporary Syrian Studies and the objectives of the Annual Forum—to contribute to building sound scholarly knowledge that supports Syria’s transition and helps shape its future—participants are required to meet the following conditions:

  • The research must address one of the political, economic, social, or cultural issues connected to Syria’s transitional reality or its future prospects.
  • The Scientific Committee welcomes proposals of around 750 words, submitted by November 15, 2025, in accordance with the standards adopted by the Center.
  • The proposal should outline the basic plan of the research, including: the research hypothesis, main questions, issues to be addressed, methodology, and a preliminary list of references and sources.
  • Proposals must be submitted along with the researcher’s curriculum vitae, through completion of the designated application form.

All completed papers will undergo peer review by the Scientific Committee. Approval of the proposal does not constitute final acceptance of the paper, which is subject to approval after submission of the full manuscript. The Arab Center for Contemporary Syrian Studies will cover travel and accommodation expenses for researchers whose papers are accepted for participation in the Forum. No honoraria will be provided for papers presented. The papers are considered the intellectual property of the Forum and are customarily published in Qalamoun Journal and/or in a collected volume or in the research section of the Center. The Forum welcomes contributions from established scholars, early-career researchers, and doctoral candidates who are near completion of their dissertations. Submissions are encouraged from across the fields of the social sciences and humanities, provided that topics are relevant to the Syrian context and its future trajectories.
