Appel à communications : Third International Summer School “Traveling Sciences: Applying the History of Sciences in Islam for Teaching and Education”, Research Foundation for the History of Science in Islam, Istanbul, 22-29/08/2014 — LIMITE : 15/05/2014

The title traveling sciences is to be understood in two respects. The history of sciences flows through time and space. The Islamic World, translating and adopting Greek, Indian, Persian and other written sources, took up the constructive scientific ideas, before weaving them in cosmologically/ethically, then unfolding and often revolutionizing them. Balancing out theory and practice, the experimental spirit flourished in the Abbasid Caliphate from the 8th century CE onwards, and then, in the early scholastic period, through adaptation, reception and assimilation, the Arabic-Islamic sciences and technologies were introduced to Europe, paving the way for the epoch-making “Renaissance” and “Enlightenment”.

Lectures are welcomed which are related to fields of research presented in Istanbul’s Museum for the History of Science and Technology in Islam and the works of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin.

Traveling sciences is also to be understood in the context of the educational and didactical potentialities of Istanbul’s museum. Beside lectures and presentations, workshops are welcomed which apply the museum’s instruments, devices or living objects (medicinal botanic garden) didactically, e.g. in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, optics etc. Sensitizing the learners to the scope and beauty of the sciences in Islam might also be developed in the form of games, models and other educational materials (small herbarium or collection of minerals etc. showing classification systems).

The results of the workshops will be part of a suit-case of the “Traveling Sciences”, conceptualized and realized in order to provide academic, educational establishments, schools and museums with teaching materials.

Abstracts of no more than 200 words, plus 5 lines of biographical information, should be sent to Mr. Balim before 15 May 2014.

Those accepted to present at the summer school will be notified by 30 May 2014. For non-active participation please send a short letter of motivation. The workshops, presentations and lectures will be structured on two levels, according to the teaching staff’s requirements and needs.
