Appel à communications : Annual Symposium of the Ernst Herzfeld Society of Islamic Art, Hambourg (Allemagne), 03-06/07/2014 — LIMITE : 31/05/2014
The conference will first of all present new and current research in the fields of archaeology, material culture and art history. Secondly, it will continue and stimulate the necessary discussion on the different directions and challenges of our field. It seems to be in transition, in museums and in universities. Excavations face difficulties as never before due to political uprisings and wars. Conversations in the past year have left the impression that the definition of our field still remains an exciting and controversial topic. We all come from different scholarly backgrounds and approach our common subject with rather diverse methods and research questions.
Hamburg offers a good background for such discussion. The founding of the University is connected with Carl Heinrich Becker, one of the pioneers of material culture for the societies creating it. Becker was a close friend of Ernst Herzfeld, and opened his journal “Der Islam” for preliminary excavation reports of Samarra and for Fritz Saxl on Art History. Hamburg was also one of the places where Kurt Erdmann, later director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin, taught.
We welcome submissions of a title and an abstract of no more than 1,000 characters of your presentation; the deadline is May 31, 2014. Each presentation is limited to 20 minutes and 10 minutes discussion. A meeting of the graduate and PhD students is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, July 3rd. A poster session is possible. The symposium proper begins on Friday, July 4th, in the morning. The annual meeting of the society will be held as usual on Saturday afternoon.
