The post-October 7th Strategic landscape in the Middle East
Seminar organized by the MENA Programme
A conversation with Professor Karim Emile Bitar
October 7th and its aftermath have reawakened deep-seated traumas for both Israelis and Palestinians, the trauma of Pogroms and of the Shoah in 20th century Europe, and for Palestinians the trauma of the naqba. The events that followed have also demonstrated the persistence, centrality and universality of the Palestinian question. It has shown the failure of Donald Trump’s attempt, through the Abraham accords, to drown out the Palestinian issue into an economic mega deal with Gulf countries. Today, the region is mired in a series of proxy wars in the midst of competitive multipolarity where actors struggle to define their position. Saudi Arabia’s attempt at extending the normalization process has been impeded, and yet the United States will continue to try and pursue this path. Iran’s regime is in survival mode and yet continues to support a series of proxies in Lebanon and Iraq. Lebanon is stuck at the heart of the conflict between Iran and Israel, and is facing an unprecedented existential threat to its own survival.
Karim Emile Bitar will offer an in-depth analysis of the flailing geopolitical landscape of the Middle East in a context marked by the seeming collapse of most Arab states, the powerlessness of the European Union, and the deliberate will of the United States to not use its leverage to incite Israel to change its policy.
Karim Emile Bitar is Professor of International Relations and former Dean of the Université Saint Joseph in Beirut, Lebanon. He is a Senior research fellow at Institut des Relations Internationales et Stratégiques, and non-resident scholar at Middle East Institute in Washington DC.
A graduate of Ecole Normale d’Administration (promotion Cyrano de Bergerac, 1997-1999), Karim Emile Bitar is an expert on the geopolitics of the Middle East and has written extensively on conflict resolution, democracy and human rights in the Arab world.
