Call for Submissions | Oxford Middle East Review “Resistance” — LIMITE : 03/01/2025
The editors welcome submissions for the ninth issue of the Oxford Middle East Review, a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal for discussion and debate on issues relating to the Middle East and North Africa. The theme for this issue will be:
Resistance
The Middle East and North Africa has long been a region marked by struggles for autonomy, identity, and justice. Across its diverse landscapes and histories, resistance has emerged as a defining force that has shaped political, social, and cultural movements. From anti-colonial uprisings to contemporary struggles for self-determination, the idea of resistance holds a unique position in the Middle East, where the forces of imperialism, occupation, and authoritarianism have all played significant roles in the region’s history – and have continually been opposed. In this way, resistance is a powerful lens through which we can examine the region’s past, present, and future.
Yet resistance in the MENA region is not monolithic. The Arab Spring showed us that resistance can be grassroots and peaceful; the Algerian National Liberation Front and Palestinian Liberation Organisation have shown us that it can take the form of armed insurgency. Leaders such as Mohammad Mossadegh and Gamal Abdel Nasser have led resistance movements against Western imperialism; and, closer to our days, Iranian women such as Neda Agha-Soltan and Nika Shakerami have given their lives in resisting religious tyranny and domestic oppression.
In this issue, we seek to understand how resistance operates as a dynamic and evolving concept. How do movements of resistance define themselves? How have resistance movements in different countries learned from one another? What role do ideology and identity play in shaping the resistance narratives? How have external actors, including global powers, influenced or co-opted these movements? How do different forms of resistance interact with one another in a single context? What is the role of individuals in these movements?
We invite authors to reflect on the role of resistance as practised by the people of the Middle East and North Africa, the governments of these countries, in addition to their civil societies. Submissions can define and explore resistance through any lens they see fit, from state-sponsored resistance from above or subaltern resistance from below.
We welcome submissions exploring the theme of change from historical and contemporary perspectives and invite authors to engage with it through empirical, theoretical, and comparative approaches, as well as specific case studies. We are an interdisciplinary journal looking for contributions investigating the political, economic, social and/or cultural landscape of the MENA region. Papers will be considered for the journal’s three sections:
Policy Section:
Shorter briefs or position papers up to 2,000 words (including references and citations) aimed at influencing contemporary debate or policy-making.
